Tokyo Indie is pleased to announce that on September 21st, as part of our 3rd anniversary celebrations, we will be hosting a very special night of musical entertainment and high jinx with the Scissor Sisters as they bring the Japan leg of their world tour to a close. Joining us behind the decks for the party will be the inimitable Jake Shears, lead singer with the band (pictured centre-left), and official Scissor Sisters tour DJ, Sammy Jo. During my recent interview with Jake he filled me in on how the pair met:

“Sammy Jo and I met about 12 years ago when I was go-go dancing. He was the DJ at the party; it was called Click and Drag. Sammy has exquisite taste in music, and it really reflects elements the band loves. Not only is he a great DJ, but he’s a blast to hang out with. This is very important when you’re on the road. He’s always turning me on to music.”

As we talked more about his new role as a DJ, Jake went on to reveal that he is “a massive fan of dance music” and will be treating us to something which contrasts to the glam-pop of the Scissor Sisters. “I can’t wait to be able to do something that is vastly different from the band” he elucidates, “I love great house music, and techno. I stay away from a lot of vocals and I like to keep it pretty hard […] people are always very surprised at the music that I play”. Indeed, I too was taken aback when he cited “I Need” by The Loops of Fury as his ultimate party tune. With a keen ear for a dance-floor monster, Jake and Sammy Jo are definitely going to keep you dancing all night long.

As they and the rest of the Scissor Sisters crew have reputations as party animals in the extremist sense of the word, I asked Jake what the funniest thing he had seen in a club and he recounted what he saw happen at The Spotlight (an old bar that has since closed) in Los Angeles. “I was watching a go-go dancer on a pedestal that was looking a bit worn down if you know what I mean” laughs Jake, “I said to a friend, I think that guy is fully going to fall flat on his face. Lo-and-behold, not 1 minute later…He did!”

With the Scissor Sisters’ self-confessed love of Japan, this is going to be a night that lives long in the memory. To keep the intimate vibe at this special DJ show we will limit the venue to 400 lucky people only, so please arrive early to avoid disappointment. In the words of the Scissor Sisters themselves, “Let’s lock the door and have a kiki!”

Jake Shears and Sammy Jo will join Tokyo Indie for this exclusive event on September 21st at Trump Room in Shibuya. For more information and discount, click here.
