Plaid – Scintilli

Plaid – Scintilli Main Image

Plaid, the British electronic duo of Andy Turner and Ed Handley, have managed to carve out a niche with their own minimal techno sound and won fans around the world.

Despite numerous high profile collaborations with the likes of Bjork, and work for various labels such as Warp and providing the soundtracks for several films (such as Heaven’s Door and Tekkon Kinkreet), they seem to do little to chase fame, working at a leisurely pace.

Their new release Scintilli will be their first non-film studio album in eight years. The music, which skitters in a ghostly way, is engaging and at times entrancing, in an ethereal mode akin perhaps to Boards of Canada, but never grabbing one by the throat like label mates Aphex Twin or Squarepusher might. In fact Scintilli seems better suited for an intimate night at home rather than most of their more dancefloor ready Warp counterparts.

Be sure to have a look at the amazingly atmospheric video for 35 Summers above.

Plaid will play Shibuya’s WWW on the 3rd of December – tickets available here.

Scintilli is available at all good record shops now.
