What We're About
There is a large and vibrant indie music club scene in Tokyo. Yet for your average non-Japanese speaking foreigner living in or visiting Tokyo, these nights are often hard to find. This was our experience when we first touched down in Japan a few years ago. Coming from the indie hot spots of London, New York, Melbourne and Philadelphia, we came on the promises of Harajuku high fashion parties, neon lit back alleys and underground basement bars which oozed indie cool. Yet week after week we found ourselves disappointed and dejected, slouched in some corner of a cheesy R'n'B club. It took a while, but as we found our feet with the Japanese language we started to get to grips with the indie scene here. We realised what we really could have done with was a go-to site available in English, which listed indie club night events going on in and around the Tokyo area. And so we decided to put together Tokyo Indie in order to give other indie lovers a fighting chance.
Alongside our website we also DJ at various nights and throw the odd event of our own. With DJs from across the world (UK, America, Australia, Germany, Japan) our aim is to be inclusive, bringing in a multi-national crowd of people from various backgrounds who are united by a love of the music. We try to keep it simple - gone are the heavily mashed up, cut-up, ground-up versions of The Smiths re-mixed with minimal techno. Instead we play the original indie classics the way people want to hear them, and we're a crowd pleaser every time.
